The Daily Celestial team recently spoke with renowned forecaster and researcher Timur Garipov. As part of this conversation, the sides discussed questions about why natural disasters began to occur more and more often and where they may arise in the near future.

Inspired by this conversation, we decided to compose a short article on what should be in the so-called Go Bag (emergency briefcase) and how to use it.

Go Bag. List of necessary things

To begin with, let's consider what should be in the “emergency briefcase” by default. List of basic things:

• First aid kit with means and medicines for first aid;

• Two flashlights: headlamp and manual. It is best if they are diode - such a device emits the strongest possible light with minimum energy requirements. You also need to take a supply of batteries with you, which will last for at least a week.

• Cell phone with radio function—in case the cellular communication ceases to function, and only the ability to communicate by radio remains.

• Utility knife for performing basic survival actions. It will also not be needless to have a hunting knife for rough work.

• Matches, gas lighters, dry alcohol for starting fire in any conditions; • A three-day supply of food and water;

• The whistle is not an obvious thing, but it is necessary in order to attract attention over long distances in the absence of other forms of communication.

• Hygiene products and a set of underwear with socks.

Preparing for survival—what threats will we face in the near future?

In addition to general issues, together with Timur Garipov, we also discussed specific problems, the threat of which is most urgent for us now. First of all, we are talking about floods and earthquakes. Why is this happening?

The world is now a turbulent climatic situation—last year in summer the temperature reached 45 degrees in many countries, and now everything will be exactly the opposite—frosts are likely to come. Due to such fluctuations in the weather, the centers of instability arise in the world, which turn into earthquakes and floods.

And look, this is already happening! An earthquake hit Turkey in 2019 (as predicted), and more of such events expected in the coming months. In such situations, it is especially important that you have a whistle and a telephone with radio function in your Go Bag. Earthquakes often destroy urban infrastructure, and the only available means of communication are such primitive things as radio waves and whistles.

Emergency Code of Conduct

Before you learn the rules of survival in emergencies, you need to take measures to protect yourself from them. Timur Garipov recommends that tourists limit their visits to the Pacific Ring of Fire area, since it is there that the probability of flooding is the highest. Contact the emergency service, where you will be given basic instructions, as well as given a reminder of what to do if you still find yourself in a flood zone. The basic rules of conduct are as follows:

• Turn off electricity, water, and gas at home. Move all valuables to the attic or upstairs so that no water can reach them.

• Close all doors and windows tightly. If possible, seal them by any means, or at least just hammer with plywood.

• When evacuating, take the assembled Go Bag with you.

• Move to a location that is unlikely to be reached by the water level. Stay there until further instructions from the rescue team.

• If during the evacuation you get your clothes wet, make a fire and try to dry them to avoid diseases.

So, we have told everything about what should be in the Go Bag, briefly explained the causes of climatic disasters, and also introduced the course of what to do if you are still overtaken by a cataclysm. To find out the forecast for the near personal future, we recommend installing the Daily Celestial App. It has a cosmological calendar that you can use to navigate in everyday life.
